COMPOSITE HIGH-GRADE US M1850 STYLE STAFF & FIELD
OFFICER'S SWORD. Overall length: 38 1/2". Blade length: 31 1/4". Blade has a single wide fuller with a secondary fuller near the spine. Blade is etched on each side with a 5 1/2" panel that shows a spread-wing American eagle on one side, and a large "US" on the other. Gilded brass hilt of classic M1850 staff & field form with a pierced semi-basket guard that includes foliate motifs with a large "US". Knuckle bow shows lineal decoration with slight embellishments where it joins the fully articulated eagle pommel. Silver grip with faux wire wrap. Scabbard has a brown finished body with gilded brass mounts. The top & middle mounts have acanthus leaf suspension straps with brass suspension rings. The bottom mount & drag are plain. It is quite likely that all parts of this sword are not original to a single sword. CONDITION: blade has a light gray lightly mottled patina, and the etching remains strong. The hilt is quite solid with traces of original gilded finish and a tarnished grip. Scabbard body may have seen some refinishing work at some point. Scabbard mounts show slight traces of original gilding. (02-19262/BF). $800-1,100.
