HANOVER DRAGOONS. Williams Carter Wickham (1820-1888) was a VA lawyer & plantation owner who voted against secession, but nonetheless became an important Confederate cavalry commander & after the war Wickham was a republican who campaigned for General Grant & became president of the Chesapeake & OH railway. Wickham’s family descended from the first families of VA including General Thomas Nelson who signed the Declaration of Independence & was the Revolutionary War governor of VA. Other relatives included Thomas Nelson, who was one of the founders of Yorktown. His mother was a first cousin of Robert E. Lee. Wickham’s family home was the Hickory Hill Plantation in Hanover county where these flags originated, Hickory Hill is on the National Register of Historic Places & is owned by consignor of this wonderful collection. First National “Stars and Bars” flag, about 34" x 24", all cotton w/ hemmed edges, dbl. applique stars, still retains part of its original haft broken off just below bottom edge. Polished cotton stars are glued like seen on so many war time personal & bible flags. Adopted March 4, 1861. Variations w/ 7 up to 13 stars were made. CONDITION: good to very good overall, blue dye has all turned to a plum/brown, red mostly bright w/ fading & soiling as can be seen in photos, minor insect damage, sm. reductions as can be seen in photos.
