CONFEDERATE CANTEEN CARRIED BY JAMES SMITH, CO. F
58TH ALA. Impeccably carved “J H SMITH / Co F 58 Ala.”. Canteens both North & South are often identified by soldiers scratching or carving names or initials; it’s always scarce though to find full name, company & regiment. It is interesting to note that there are also 2 other sets of initials carved into this canteen, by either previous or later owners which provenance identifies in the same regiment. The 58th AL was organized Tullahoma, TN in July 1863, this unit was consolidated from the 32ND AL among other units. James H. Smith originally enlisted at Choctaw, AL in May 1862. He was captured at the battle of Stones River January 1, 1863. We know he was released or escaped from prison in time to join the 58th as this canteen is so nicely carved. UNATTACHED ACCESSORIES: history of the 58th Alabama Infantry, taken from the American Civil War Research Database. CONDITION: sound w/ hand worn patina, iron bands & 2 remaining strap hooks have iron patina, spout hole has old gnawing & has extended size to whatever creature was making a home of this canteen. (02-13590/JS). $2,000-3,000.
