CONFEDERATE JC WILSON, HOUSTON TEXAS CAVALRY

OFFICER'S SABER. Texas sword maker J C Wilson was a large manufacturer, though little is known of his operation other than several mentions in wartime Houston newspapers. There is only one maker marked foot officer's sword known & one unique staff sword. The finish of the brass on the two marked swords is distinctive w/ smooth yellow color seen on this sword & most likely J C Wilson too. Often this slotted guard pattern is mistakenly identified as College Hill. College Hill did make similar hilts, but their blades almost always have distinctive ”penknife” ricasso.
This is a unique saber regardless of maker signed “Pinguely” etched on ricasso who, if identified, could solve mystery of maker. 34” Hand forged blade w/ ricasso cut like Thomas, Griswold; etching like College Hill which utilizes top 3/4" of blade leaving cutting edge unetched but no distinct border frame w/ 25” etched panels including a central 5” panel on one side showing harbor w/ lighthouse, fort, and 2 ships; Colombian shield; spread wing eagle w/ head lowered. Pommel cap utilizes brass spanner nut attaching blade instead of peening. Accompanying scabbard is brass mounted steel of unknown origin but does not appear to be Confederate. CONDITION: very good-fine overall. Blade retains most of its orig bright etch & shine. Hilt & pommel have dark smooth mottled olive/dark mustard patina. Leather grip & wire wrap intact w/ scuffing & loss at high areas. Protective washer is replaced. Scabbard is sound, fits poorly due to missing wood shims, brass drag is well executed restoration. (02-15408/JS). $4,000-5,000.
