CONFEDERATE SAINT ANDREWS CROSS BATTLE FLAG.
42.5" x 29.5", all hand sewn. Red field & blue cross are silk, crepe or twill weave. 4.5" White stars & .5" fimbriation, 1 sides. Backed w/ a tabby weave, loose woven brown cotton. A very similar constructed flag was sold by Brunk auctions, July 16, 2011, as personal flag of Maj. Richard K. Read, Confederate Engineer's, along w/ a Staunton depot battle flag. The personal flag has identical features of basting stitches on verso & overlapping cross & fimbriation. CONDITION: very good overall, light soiling. Backing has tears & separations w/ series of vertical staining of unknown origin. All materials possibly contemporary to the Civil war but the crepe woven fabric is more typical 1870-1890. The sewing threads all appear to be of type used during the War. This flag came from a collection of Veteran's memorabilia over 20 years ago. (02-14599/JS). $2,000-3,000.
