CONFEDERATE USED DICTIONARY, NAVY UNIFORM,
MARINE SEA BAG & CHINESE SWORD. 1) CONFEDERATE HOWRY GROUP. A wonderful little book titled, “Pocket Dictionary of the English Language” inscribed in several places, in period ink, to “C.B. Howry Co. A 29th Mississippi Regiment Walthall’s Brigade Hindman’s Division Polk’s Corps Army of Tenn.”. Book is filled w/ notes by Howry on various subjects including the war, literary quotes, newsy items & more. Book includes a note from Howry stating this book was carried by him throughout the war, a signed CDV of Howry in civilian clothes & a post Civil War love letter addressed to Howry’s wife in Oxford, Mississippi. Book is contained in a sm. brown painted metal box w/ a brass plaque on the front that reads, “JUDGE HOWRY WASHINGTON DC”. Lot further includes a photograph of Howry later in life when he was a judge on the US Court of Claims. There is also an early framed polychromatic Howry family crest. Charles Bowen Howry was born in the year 1844 in Oxford, Mississippi & saw distinguished Confederate service during the Civil War as a 1st lieutenant in the 29th Mississippi Infantry. He was a Mississippi attorney & politician becoming a federal judge on the United States Court of Claims. CONDITION: book is quite tattered w/ loose covers but can be easily read. Additional notes by Howry are quite legible. Other papers show minor foxing. CDV is light but clear. Box has notable paint loss. (02-13509/BF). 2) WWII US NAVY AVIATION MACHINIST’S MATE UNIFORM. Uniform consists of jumper, pants & “Donald Duck” style hat w/ US Navy ribbon. Left sleeve shows a gold & silver bullion Aviation Machinist’s Mate 1st Class rating badge above 4 gold bullion service stripes. Permanently sewn on ribbons include Bronze Star, American Defense, American Theater, European Theater, Asiatic Pacific Theater & Victory medal. CONDITION: uniform shows light wear overall w/ no notable damage. (02-13511/BF). 3) MARINE SEABAG. A standard green canvas sea bag stenciled on 1 side “U.S.M.C.” w/ the owner’s partially legible name & serial number. The other side is painted in silver & red paint showing an eagle/globe/anchor w/ a ribbon above that reads, “Korea R.E. Vaillancourt Japan” & the initials “USMC” below. CONDITION: bag shows light wear overall. Painted decoration is nearly complete. (02-13512/BF). 4) CHINESE EXECUTIONER SWORD. Overall length: 38”. Blade length: 28”. Plain single fullered blade w/ iron guard, ferrule & pommel. Black painted wooden grip w/ a sm. hole near the top likely for a lanyard. Black painted, hide covered wooden scabbard w/ iron mounts. CONDITION: blade has a light gray patina w/ scattered areas of light discoloration. Iron shows little or no oxidation. Finish on grip is 95%. Finish on scabbard is 95%+. (02-13514/BF). $800-1,400.
