GARNITURE OF ENGRAVED ENGLISH PERCUSSION FIREARMS. The mid century cased set includes a double bbl. shotgun, sporting rifle, 2 traveling pistols, 2 pocket pistols & a pepperbox; all of the 1850 era. This gentleman hunter set contains everything you needed to go hunting for an array of game in the British Isles. As documented in the Vintage Gun Journal Oct. 2021 this set was called "Fit for an expedition. A travelling man's sporting & protection battery". This set appears to have been a group of arms procured by this connoisseur of arms & has been professionally cased for his travels & pleasures. This walnut case contains a multitude of ammunition & accessories such as wads, cards, powder flasks, leather shot flask with shot, ball molds, cap tins, lead balls, capper, chargers & all fitted inside this great case with brass handle. The case measures 36 1/2"X 14" X 5 3/4" and when filled with all he guns and accessories weighs close to 100 lbs. Consignor states that in his life he and "other experts who looked at this item, they never never seen the deluxe casing. This may be one of a kind". The guns are described as the following:
1) CONSTABEL 14 BORE SXS SHOTGUN. NSN. Damascus barrel has nickel bead front sight, Birmingham proofs and pierced platinum plugs. The locks have scroll and border engraving. Wedge and wrist escutcheons are silver, as the rest of the gun is iron with scroll engraving. The stock has a checkered wrist and 14 1/2" length of pull. CONDITION: The damascus barrel has a distinct twist pattern with very mild oxidation. Breech end of the rib is separated and raised. Locks have light traces of original finish. The stock is in very good condition with defined checkering and minor age imperfections. Mechanically fine.
2) E. AKRILL HALF STOCK SPORTING RIFLE. Cal. 45. S# 2346. Bbl. 29 1/2" octagon of damascus with a browned finish. Barrel is signed "AKRILL". The rifle barrel has a dovetail silver blade front sight and 3 leaf rear sight with gold lines graduated for 50, 100, & 200 yards. Underside has a "2346" along with "1856 / `866" Birmingham proof marks. The "E. Akrill" lock has extensive scroll engraving that matches the iron furniture. The pistol grip stock ha s a checkered forearm and wrist, shell carving at the base of the wrist with sling eye on the bottom of the butt. The second sling eye in on the middle ramrod pipe. E. Akrill was active in the 1830-1850 era. CONDITION: in very good condition with the majority of original finish showing dark brown patina and minor oxidation. The stock is also fine with repaired cracks at the base of the wrist and toe having minor age imperfections. Mechanically fine.
3 & 4) MATCHED PAIR OF JEAVONSE TRAVELING OR HOLSTER PISTOLS. Cals. 28 bore. NSN. Bbls. 8 1/2" octagon of brown damascus steel with smooth bores. Barrels have brass bead sights, Birmingham proofs and banded breech plugs. Back action locks are signed "JEAVONS". Half length stocks have horn forearm caps, checkered wrists and a small compartment in the pommel caps. Ebony ramrods held on iron underribs by single pipes. Jeavons shop was located at 37 Stanifort St. circa 1840. CONDITION: very good condition. Locks and hammers retain some dark case colors. German silver furniture has aged patina. Stocks show light wear, marks and small cracks. The underrib is detached on one pistol. Sound locks. Very good dark bores.
5 & 6) MATCHED PAIR OF JEAVONS POCKET PISTOLS. Cals. 36. NSN. Bbls. 1 5/8" octagon with smooth bores and case colored finish. Top flats are marked "JEAVONS". Brass boxlock actions with center mounted hammers and folding triggers. Actions and brass butt caps have scroll engraving. Hammers have dragons head engraving. Bottoms of barrels and frames have Birmingham proofs. Checkered round butt stocks. CONDITION: very fine showing at least 80% finish. Brass has mild aged patina. Mechanically sound with very good dark bores.
7) ENGLISH BAR HAMMER PEPPERBOX REVOLVER. Cal. 35. NSN. Bbls. 2 5/8", 6 shot fluted cluster with Birmingham proofs. Case hardened round action with center mounted hammer and nipple shield having highlights of scroll engraving and case colored finish. CONDITION: barrels, action and fittings retain 60% lightly faded finish. Original wood finish shows handling marks. Mechanically fine. Good dark bores. (01-21609). ALL ANTIQUE. $40,000-60,000.
