CONTEMPORARY HAWKEN TYPE 1/2 STOCK PERCUSSION

MOUNTAIN RIFLE. Cal. 45. NSN. The 30" heavy octagon bbl. with underrib has percussion bolster on side and is fitted with simple breech plug. Rifle is sighted with buckhorn V-notch rear and silver bead front sights. Case hardened percussion lock has flat faced serpentine hammer, and is unmarked. Rock maple half stock with some curly grain has pewter nose cap and is iron mounted. Trigger guard has curl at rear forming grip. Crescent buttplate has 5" return. Stock features a swept right hand cheekpiece and attaches to bbl. by two sidebolts through oval steel escutcheons. Fiberglass ramrod with brass tip mounts through two plain pipes and matching thimble. CONDITION: fine as artificially aged, bbl. retaining nearly all original brown, lock with most of its case color. Stock retains most of its oil finish with attractive bright areas simulating wear. Bore is shiny but shows some light frosting, may clean. Lock and triggers work. Consignor’s tag indicates rifle was made by Tom Dawson, noted builder from the 60s. PROVENANCE: Estate of Frank Glenn Marsh. (01-21279/MGM). ANTIQUE. $500-1,200.
