CURLY MAPLE FLINTLOCK INCISED CARVED UNSIGNED

KENTUCKY RIFLE ATTRIBUTED TO JOSEPH WELSHANS OF YORK COUNTY AREA. Cal. 50. NSN. Overall length: 60 1/2", 4 1/2" x 1 5/8" buttplate, 45" full oct. bbl. Bbl. is unsigned. Rifle has a curly maple stock & nicely checkered wrist. The characteristics of this gun are correct for the York County area. Incised carving under the rear of the cheek plate could well be attributed to gunsmith Joseph Welshans. Patch box on the gun is the type commonly used by York County gunsmith F. Zorger. The stock checkering has a nice silver heart shaped inlay at the top of the wrist, it is also ornamented w/ a silver star shaped medallion set into the cheekpiece. The stock is very nicely incised carved w/ scroll design. CONDITION: good; the forward portion of the forestock has some replacements & repair to the last 14" - 15" of the wood, which now includes both some original wood together w/ some replacement wood; all colored to blend. There is also a small replacement piece of about 3" forward of the lockplate. The sideplate & the Zorger-style patch box would appear to have been in service replacements. The brass toeplate is missing 1 1/2" of its length. (01-20876/496). ANTIQUE. $4,000-6,000.
