CURLY MAPLE KENTUCKY RIFLE ATTRIBUTED TO DALE

SHIEL, DOLPHIN COUNTY. Cal. 44 rifled bore. NSN. Bbl. 33". Curly maple stock, 4 piece brass patchbox w/ 5 piercings, 25 silver inlays. 6 bbl. wedge inlays are in the shape of fish. Sideplate engraved “JUNE 3RD 1830”. Incised carved rear of the cheekpiece. Cheekpiece inlay is a lg. 3" silver shark. Triangular stress crack at the toe has been repaired by adding new wood. The flintlock is marked “C. BIRD & CO. PHILAD WARRANTED” & the lock has dbl. set triggers. Back of bbl. at the bbl. tang engraved & the top bbl. flat has a name in script, which is located 22" from the breech. This name appears to be “C J” w/ following letters illegible. CONDITION: very good overall, several insets are restored, frizzen screw replaced. Ramrod channel has worn through wood between rear entrance ferrule & saddle plate. Single ramrod ferrule is 12" from rear entrance ferrule. The gun appears to be original length, mechanically fine & clear rifled bore. PROVENANCE: Collection of Dr. John Persing. (01-19558/RG).
