CURLY MAPLE UPPER SUSQUEHANNA RIFLE ATTRIBUTED TO

GEORGE MILLER NORTHUMBERLAND COUNTY, PA.
Cal. 45 rifled bore. NSN. Bbl. 39". Overall length 55". Bbl. signed “G. M.” on top flat. This fine, curly maple rifle has an elaborate 4 piece brass engraved patchbox w/ 8 piercings. Brass comb inlay measures 7 1/2" long & the gun has 20 silver inlays. Incised carving rear of the cheekpiece & a very nicely figured saddle plate 6 3/4" long. Flintlock retained by single screw appears reconverted & has dbl. set triggers. This rifle has been attributed to George Miller, who worked in Sunbury, Northumberland County PA. CONDITION: very good to fine overall, other than reconversion lock components, rifle appears original & complete. Carving side of butt has a long shrinkage crack from the cheekpiece to the buttplate & the toe of the butt is cracked due to shrinkage. These are a result from aging & do not detract from the appearance or value of the rifle. Stock is sound w/ only inset repair being about .5" wedge between lock & bbl. tang, hand worn patina. Mechanically fine w/ well defined rifled bore. PROVENANCE: Collection of Dr. John Persing. (01-19605/RG). ANTIQUE. $4,000-7,000.
