Cal. 56 smooth bore. NSN. Bbl. 41" oct. bbl. Half stock by “J. Hapgood / Shrewsbury”. Typical New England style long rifle w/ 2 piece long narrow patchbox w/ pointed finial. Engraved on patchbox in script “Jos. B. Wright / Pepperell”. Joseph B. Wright (1810-1880) was a prominent Pepperell, MA. business man. Joab Hapgood (1804-1890) apprenticed to Silas Allen, the leading gunsmith in Shrewsbury early 19th century. Joab started making flintlocks in 1826, eventually employing a lg. shop. Many of his guns are known as he was in the gun business for almost 50 years. This is one early example, most of his surviving guns are percussion. CONDITION: very good overall, appears original & complete. The usual pinned hardwood rib on bottom of bbl. has 2 straight brass pipes. Retaining original wood ramrod w/ attached iron worm. Iron is a mottled brown patina w/ pitting. Brass furniture has light mustard patina. Stock is very good w/ sharp edges. Carved horn nose cap. Mechanically functional w/ smooth, dark bore.
