California Bighorn sheep migration - Sheep Collar Project Donation
California Bighorn sheep migration and their risk of overlapping with domestic sheep

Research Project:

Examination of the movement of individual California Bighorn Sheep within several herds in the alpine ecosystems in British Columbia, Canada. The goal is to learn more about their ecology, seasonal habitat use, movement patterns and interactions with domestic sheep. The proposal is to fly by helicopter and capture, radio-collar and monitor 15 sheep (rams and ewes) over three years. The data acquired will fill the data gaps on the California Bighorn Sheep in British Columbia and can support management decisions and actions aimed at the conservation of the species.

The objective of the study is to learn more about the basic ecology, focused on seasonal habitat use and movement patterns of the unique California Bighorn Sheep in British Columbia. Furthermore we are going to research the interactions of this wild sheep herd with other wild herds and domestic sheep to understand the risk of disease transfer (Mycoplasma ovipneumoniae) as well as the impact of increased human activity in the area. In the end the results will be used to influence the management and increase the protection of core habitats and migration corridors. There is significant value and urgency for protecting this unique population in the province.

We are looking for supporters and funding. You can contribute to conservation by funding one or more of the sheep collars needed for the study. One collar costs $2,500.

This is a 100% donation.
