Cased Pair of Engraved Smith & Wesson No. 2
Old Army Revolvers .32 S&W Long SNs: 24156 & 25997 Exceptional period cased and engraved pair of tip-up single action spur trigger revolvers, manufactured in Springfield, Mass circa 1864. Includes letters from Roy Jinks, Smith & Wesson Product Manager & Historian and Herbert G. Houze former curator of the Winchester Arms Museum & author. In Mr. Jinks’ 1976 dated letter he wrote “I regret that I cannot establish that these guns are factory engraved and factory cased from the photographs.” In Mr. Houze’s 2004 dated letter he wrote “I am of the professional opinion that they were engraved, plated, as well as boxed in New York City circa 1865”. We agree with Mr. Houze’s assessment as this set possesses quintessential features indicative of New York City work in that time period. Revolver configuration: Nickel plated finish, New York style scroll engraving, ribbed 6" barrel with fixed ejector stud underneath, round blade front sight, ‘v’ notch rear sight cut into the cylinder stop leaf, non-fluted six shot cylinder with roll stamped patent dates, smooth spur trigger, knurled hammer spur, large square butt frame and two-piece smooth rosewood grips. Both revolvers have matching assembly numbers on the barrel, cylinder & frame and matching serial numbers stamped in the right grip panel. The locking presentation case is constructed of figured walnut and has a blank inlayed plaque in the top of the lid, green & brown velvet lined French fitted interior with 26 round cartridge block (full) and lidded corner compartments. Revolvers are primarily in-the-white with little remaining finish and a moderate amount of scattered pin prick pitting. Actions are in good working order, the bores are good, the markings are good, the engraving shows age and the rosewood grips are very good with some blemishes & small losses. Condition is NRA Very Good. ***Antique Firearm***
