This is a spike gun stock war club from Umatilla Walla Walla Native American Indian, Chief John Sampson circa 1850. Chief John Sampson is believed to have died circa 1894 and is buried at Fort Walla Walla he was a scout for the US Cavalry. The piece shows a tiger oak gunstock war club with brass trade tacks accenting both sides and the wood showing various crude scrapes which have been smoothed over during the years. The original hardwood gunstock handle, while in fine condition overall, has lost wood density over the 160 years of its life. It is unexspectantly light to handle and has very minor flaking of the wood grain in 3 spots. The peice also shows a braided Indian tanned buckskin handle strapwith a translucent rose and yellow early very smallglass trade seed beads. The piece shows the single iron spike which is pinned into the wood. This was most likely only used on special occasions as it shows an exceptional well preserved museum quality condition. a single large 3 1/2" spike. Measures 30 1/2" overall. Circa 1860s.
