U.S. Civil War Battlefield Pickup Austrian Lorenz Percussion Rifle, NVSN, .54 cal., 37-1/2'' barrel, bright finish, beech stock, with block rear sight. Sideplate marked ''859'' (1859). Cheekpiece area of stock is marked in period white paint, ''Fort Fisher Jan. 15, 1865'', with the initials ''HCB''. Confederate purchased Lorenz rifles saw heavy use in the Army of Tennessee in 1863-64, and often praised as being superior to the Enfield. On Jan. 15, 1865, Fort Fisher fell after a massive Federal amphibious assault, which helped seal the fate of the Confederacy, as Fort Fisher kept North Carolina's port of Wilmington open to blockade runners supplying goods to the South. Condition is excellent showing light general carbon spotting to bright barrel and some moderate toning to triggerguard. Stock is excellent and ramrod is present. Est.: $1,800-$2,400. (Antique)
