with 3 branch "D" guard and etched blade similar to an 1860 cavalry officer's sword. The hilt shows 20-30% period original gold gilding. Blade is 34" in length with unstopped blood groove and "clipped" point. Blade shows traces of etching with stand of arms, sun and wavy lines at ricasso. Foliate decoration on spine of blade matches hilt. "J C WILSON HOUSTON" etched into rim of guard in block letters. The condition is Fair to Good with some pitting on blade. The scabbard is dark with rust and some pitting, completely uncleaned. the grip is good with wire intact. JC Wilson may have been an importer during the Civil War, and possible Confederate supplier for officer's private purchases. A very nice swrod from an old collection.
