Civil War Era Heavy-Barrel Muzzleloading Percussion Benchrest Match or Sharpshooter's Rifle, with Remington lock and full-length steel tube sighting scope, NVSN, .40 cal., unmarked very heavy 32'' half-round half-octagon barrel has a vacant rear sight dovetail, a muzzle dovetail retaining the front scope mount, rear mount affixed to an elevated rear barrel tang specially made to support the long scope. Rifle is very heavy and with plain features typical for the type including a lockplate marked only ''Remington,'' simple hammer, brass finger-rest trigger guard, crescent buttplate with elongated lower tang, and plain small patchbox opening to a trap for patches and spare parts, a vacant German-silver oval nameplate at left butt, single iron barrel key with two German-silver escutcheons, two iron ferrules retaining the hickory ramrod, and a pewter nosecap; walnut ''perch belly'' halfstock has raised panels supporting the rear barrel tang and at either side of lock. Mfg'd ca. 1860s. Condition is good, the steel parts retaining an overall gunmetal gray coloration, the brass with light age patina. Stock is sound having normal use marks, a 2'' crack ahead of the lockplate, a triangular wood patch behind the nosecap, and a smooth oil finish. Ramrod is a probable replacement. Scope is undented, with clear optics and numerous small adjusting screws. Action is smooth; bore is bright with occasional light pitting and sharp rifling. Having all the features of a Civil War sharpshooter's rifle, this might be a very rare prize, indeed. Est.: $1,000-$1,500. (Antique)(John Ackerman collection)
