Civil War Era Swiss Single Shot Percussion Infantry Rifle-Musket, with Leather Sling, #10212, 12 bore/.77 cal., 35" round-to-octagonal barrel with bayonet lug 1.125" behind muzzle, blade front and unusual hinged elevation-adjustable rear sights, has three "(crown)/BF", "C" within "(shield)", "P" proofs and "Vaud/10212/(sunken cross)" at breech; large squared lock with rounded/pointed tail has "(crown)/BF" mark at top and large bolster/flash-shield made integral with top tang, heavy military-style hammer with knurled spur; furniture includes brass trigger guard with front sling loop and steel floorplate having two finger-ridges at rear, flat steel buttplate, brass serpentine sideplate marked "(crown)/BF", three spring-retained bands (upper of the double-strap type having integral nosecap retaining the tulip-tip steel ramrod, middle with sling loop); fullstock of oil-finished walnut has raised aprons at either side of lock, large "VAUD" and "10212" stamps at left butt. Mfg'd ca. 1860s. Condition is fine retaining bright steel surfaces having scattered light oxidation and lightly-toned brass. Stock is sound and smooth with occasional nicks and shallow dings, especially left apron at wrist. Action is stiff and strong, bore is bright showing light oxidation and sharp rifling. Russet leather sling is fine, with brass buckle and stud. The Swiss coat-of-arms is a white cross on a red field; capital of the canton (state) of Vaud is Lausanne, likely where this rifle was made.
