Antique Civil War U.S. Model 1861 Special Single Shot Contract Rifle-Musket, by Lamson, Goodnow & Yale of Windsor, VT, NVSN, .58 cal., 40'' round barrel with block-blade front (doubles as bayonet lug) and 2-leaf rear sights, is marked ''V/P/(eaglehead)'' at left breech, ''1864'' at top, eagle clutching olive branches on nipple bolster; beveled lockplate is marked ''U.S./L. G & Y/Windsor, VT'' below bolster and ''1864'' at rear; steel mountings include three spring-retained barrel bands (middle with sling swivel), two-piece trigger guard (sling swivel at front loop), curved buttplate marked ''US'' at top screw, nosecap and tulip-head ramrod; one-piece oil-stained walnut fullstock has a rectangular ''HEV'' (Henry E. Valentine) military inspector's mark and a tiny ''A'' stamped at left. Mfg'd ca. 1862-64. Condition is fine+. Metal retains smooth ''in-the-white'' polish with sharp edges and clear markings. Stock is smooth and solid with minor handling marks, sharp inspector's cartouche, and pleasing color and grain. Action is strong and smooth; bore is clean with scattered light etching and sharp rifling. Est.: $1,200-$1,800. (Antique)
