Civil War Maynard Breechloading Single-Shot Saddle-Ring Percussion Carbine, 2nd Model, #8844, .50 cal., 20" round-to-octagonal barrel marked "G.W.S." at left breech (perhaps inspector G.W. Schuman); receiver marked "Manufactured by/Mass. Arms Co./Chicopee Falls" at right and "Edward Maynard./Patentee./May 27, 1851./Dec. 6, 1859." at left ahead of the sling bar and ring, has central hammer and serpentine operating lever that tips up the barrel for loading/extraction; straight oil-finished walnut buttstock with curved steel buttplate is marked "A.J.N." and "JM" inspectors' cartouches at left side. Mfg'd ca. 1863-65. Condition is excellent retaining approx. 99% military-type barrel blue and mottling and fading case colors. Stock is sound and smooth with sharp inspectors' cartouches, a few use marks, especially at belly, and nice color and finish. Action is smooth, bore is brilliant with an area of light beginning rust 4" from muzzle, and sharp rifling. Est.: $1,800-$2,400. (Antique)
