Civil War Smith & Wesson No. 2 ''Old Model Army'' Tip-Up Spurtrigger Revolver, #18577, .32 Long RF cal., 6'' octagonal barrel, with blade front (and cylinder-stop notch rear) sights marked with maker's name and address on full-length top rib; 6-shot round cylinder is marked with 1855-60 patent dates on its central periphery; frame with integral top barrel hinge, spurtrigger sheath, and straight gripstraps, is marked ''C.F.'' (?) in Gothic letters over ''U.S.A.'' and ''18577'' on butt; varnished two-piece rosewood grips. Mfg'd ca. 1861-74. Condition is good+ as professionally refinished in full nickel plate, with sharp markings and edges. Barrel hinge is sound; action is smooth and sure; bore is shiny with deep rifling. These Civil War-production Old Model Armys were very popular with Union officers and enlisted men (as likely evidenced by this gun's butt marking). Gen. George A. Custer owned a pair and, in 1874, Wild Bill Hickok was carrying one on the night he was assassinated in Deadwood. Est.: $400-$650. (Antique)
