Civil War Sharps New Model 1863 ''Straight Breech'' Single Shot Percussion Military Carbine, #96967, .52 cal., 22'' round barrel marked ''Sharps Rifle/Manufg. Co./Hartford, Conn.'' In three lines behind barrel band and ''New Model 1863'' ahead of breech, has integral block-blade front sight and adjustable leaf rear sight; receiver marked on left side ''C. Sharps Pat./Sept. 12th, 1848'', on right side ''C. Sharps Pat./Oct. 5th, 1852'' to rear of hammer, and ''R.S. Lawrence Pat./April 12th, 1859'' at top below pellet primer. Steel furniture including left-side sling bar and ring (marked ''H.D.H.'' on rear tang), hammer, serpentine operating lever, catch, trigger, single spring-retained barrel band and crescent buttplate. Two-piece oil-finished walnut forestock and buttstock. Mfg'd 1859-1866. Condition is very good retaining traces of blue in protected areas of barrel, receiver with slivered case hardening, scattered light discoloration, and otherwise smooth gray-brown metal; edges are sharp, markings are clear, top tang screws show bright fire blue as does the lever pin. Stocks show dings and scrapes of military use, particularly on forend, nice coloration and perhaps a thin later coat of varnish. Action is tight and smooth; bore is shiny with scattered roughness and deep rifling. Est.: $1,750-$2,750. (Antique)
