Civil War Sharps New Model 1859 Cartridge Alteration Carbine, #54008, .50-70 RF cal., 22" tapered round barrel with standard carbine sights, marked with maker's name, address and "New Model 1859" on top; "straight breech" receiver has auto-extraction, left-side sling ring/bar; back-action lock has integral pellet primer device, standard Sharps/Lawrence markings on both sides. Walnut forend has single band, matching buttstock "E.F." (E. Ferrar or Edward Flather) and "D.F.C." (David F. Clark) inspectors' cartouches, 5.5" iron patchbox ("W.H." scratched inside), semi-crescent buttplate. Mfg'd early 1860s, altered and refinished 1867 at the Sharps factory. Condition is fine retaining approx. 90% dulling military-style blue and strong traces of case colors, fine edges and markings (barrel markings are weak from factory refinishing). Stocks are sound and smooth with sharp cartouches, minimal marks, pleasing finish. Action is crisp, original 6-groove bore shows overall light etching, very good rifling. Est.: $2,500-$3,500.
