Civil War Sharps New Model 1863 Breechloading Percussion Cavalry Carbine, #72542, .52 cal., 22" round barrel with carbine sights, marked with maker's name and address ahead of rear sight, "New Model 1863" behind; "straight breech" receiver has sling ring/bar and "Sharps' Pat./Sept. 13th, 1848" at left, Sharps and Lawrence markings on back-action lock with pellet primer mechanism, serpentine trigger guard/operating lever. Forend of oil-finished walnut has single spring-retained band, matching buttstock with crescent buttplate. Mfg'd mid-1860s. Condition is good retaining no original finishes, being dark brown gunmetal with scattered oxidation (bit of erosion at receiver sides), good edges and markings. Stocks are sound with light-to-moderate dings and nicks, a 3.75" wood repair at toe of buttstock, no inspector's cartouche. Action is smooth, bore shows moderate erosion with good rifling.
