Collins No. 18 Bowie/Machete in Sheath, with Civil War markings to N.Y. Regiment and decorative brass handle. The 11.75'' blade has a double fuller on both sides and is marked at the ricasso area with the Collins Legitimus arm and hammer stamp. Also stamped ''Collins & Co. Hartford, Acero Fino, Calidad, Garantizada, No.18''. Brass handle is beautifully decorated with raised lines and floral decorations. Blade is bright with very light scattered pinprick pitting, mainly on one side. Overall length is 18.25''. Leather Collins sheath is stamped with the Collins & Co. Legitimus logo and has impressed floral decorations. These fancy brass handles were fitted on No. 18 blades around 1877 to the 1890's, with the last catalogue showing them in 1904. Silver color-plated metal tip on bottom of sheath. Top of sheath has light writing of ''James H. Bean, Co(?) 193th Regiment, N.Y. Volunteers Inf. 1861-1865, Congress Winner''. Includes information from the National Archives showing James H. Bean in the 193rd New York Infantry. Est.: $750-$1,500.
