SN: 90250. This revolver is purported to have been belonged to Wild Bunch outlaw Mike Cassidy, friend and mentor of Robert Leroy Parker who later took Cassidy's name and became known as "Butch Cassidy". The backstrap is engraved in script "M.H. Cassidy". Antique double/single action revolver manufactured 1892. Sheriff or Storekeepers model with 3 1/2" barrel, not fitted with an ejector rod and has an elongated knurled cylinder pin that can be utilized to extract spent cartridges. The top of the barrel has the correct short barrel address in two-lines reading "COLT'S PT. F.A.MFG CO/HARTFORD CT. U.S.A.", the etched panel "COLT. D.A. 38" is on the left side of the barrel. Features a nickel finish, blued hammer, fixed sights, solid frame with side loading gate, bird's head grip frame. The Ivory grips are overall good with a little shrinkage, they have a nice yellow patina, there is a small chip on the bottom of the left panel. Bore is overall good, with strong rifling, has scattered areas of very light pitting. Nickel refinish is about 65% with scratches/flaking, showing a dark patina underneath, thumb wear on the right frame shows left handed use, blue visible on the trigger & screws. Colt markings are sharp/clear. Engraving is period done. Serial number match on frame, triggerguard and grip frame. Assembly number on loading gate is "210". The cylinder does not rotate as the cylinder stop does not depress. Comes with folder of research on Mike Cassidy and Colt factory letter confirming the above configuration except grips. One of twenty guns shipped Oct. 18 1892 to Hibbard, Spencer, Bartlett & Co. Chicago, Ill. There is no surviving historical documentation to confirm whether Mike Cassidy was left-handed or his middle name. Historians and the Wyoming State Historical Society note that little concrete biographical information survives about Mike Cassidy beyond the fact that he was an older cattle rustler who taught a teenaged Parker how to ride, shoot, and rustle livestock. The revolver originally came from the collection of James McGee of Louisville, Ky (Now deceased) was a well known collector of fine quality antique and historical firearms. Comes with vintage, period single-loop leather holster.
