A true ‘Black Army’. No inspectors initials. Stamped eagle head "S8" above the magazine release. On May 15, 1918, the Army Ordnance Department officially transitioned away from using monogrammed inspector initials (like JMG or WTG) at the Colt factory. This pistol’s serial number (324111) falls right after this cutoff. Instead of initials, a military inspector from this period would have stamped the pistol with a "Eagle's Head" proof mark. These pistols were made for a short time between June 1918 and March 1919 and fall within the serial number range of roughly 233,601 to 580,600. serial number 324111 falls squarely into the true "Black Army" production window. According to military shipping records from Colt's factory, this specific pistol was manufactured in mid-1918 (within the May to October 1918 production batch that ran from serial numbers 290,000 to 450,000) "United States Property" stamp on the left frame. Serial range (S/N 290,000 to 450,000, produced between May 1918 and October 1918) puts the pistol directly in the transition window where Colt was rapidly changing its manufacturing processes to meet wartime demands. At serial number 324111, having "UNITED STATES PROPERTY" on the left side of the frame is entirely correct. Late WWI era U.S. Army contract single action semi-automatic service pistol chambered in .45 Auto, manufactured in Hartford, CT circa 1918. Features a blued finish, 5" barrel, low profile round blade front sight, dovetailed rear sight with “U” notch, smooth trigger, knurled wide hammer spur, thumb safety on the left side of the frame, grip safety, push button magazine release, 7 round ‘two tone’ magazine, steel frame, smooth mainspring housing with lanyard loop and double diamond checkered walnut grips. Markings: Left slide - "PATENTED APR.20,1897. SEPT.9,1902/DEC.19,1905. FEB.14,1911. AUG.19,1913", "COLT'S PT. F.A. MFG. CO./HARTFORD, CT. U.S.A.", [Rampant Colt], Right slide "MODEL OF 1911. U.S. ARMY". Left frame "UNITED STATES PROPERTY, right frame No "324111". Pistol retains approximately 70% of its original finish with strong bluing retained on the frame & slide with a small amount of scattered surface rust, flaking/wear on top of the slide, front strap and the under side of the trigger guard with some scattered light pitting. The action is sound, the bore is very good/bright, strong rifling, the markings are clear and the wood grips are very good with minor wear. NRA Condition-Good. C&R Firearm.
