Colt 2nd Model Dragoon .44 Cal SN: 8109
Early "U.S." marked single action percussion revolver chambered for .44 caliber ammunition, manufactured circa 1850(first year production). Colt Second Model Dragoons are significantly scarcer than the First and Third Models with the approximate production numbers as follows: 2,700 2nd Mdl, 7,000 1st Mdl & 10,500 3rd Model. This revolver features a 7 1/2" part octagon barrel, German silver blade front sight, 'v' notch rear sight cut into the hammer, loading lever with vertical style latch, non-fluted six-shot cylinder with rectangular stops & no observed scene, smooth trigger, non-roller bearing hammer with smooth spur, plated brass backstrap & square back trigger guard, and one-piece smooth walnut grip. The barrel is stamped "-ADRESS SAMl COLT NEW-YORK CITY" on the top reading towards the cylinder and the frame reads "COLT'S/ ATENT/U S." The serial number 8109 is found on the frame, triggerguard, backstrap & cylinder pin, while the the partial number 109 is found on the loading lever and cylinder. Other observed markings are "G" on the triggerguard below the serial number and "9" on the loading lever latch. Revolver appear to have been heavily cleaned at some point with the majority of the iron surfaces displaying a smooth light grey patina with some mottled brown tones. The brass grip frame appear to have been replated with approximately 70% intact. The barrel wedge and loading lever catch are modern replacements. The action is slightly out of time but otherwise in functional, the bore shows strong rifling with some scattered pin prick pitting, markings are mostly legible and the wood grip is very good with worn edges at the butt. Condition is NRA Good. ***Antique Firearm***
