Colt New Service .44 cal SN: 34669
Vintage U.S. military large frame double action service revolver currently chambered for .44 Russian & .44 Special, manufactured in Hartford, CT circa 1911. The model 1909 was an interim solution to the shortage of sidearms created by the trials for the 1911. All but 350 of the 19,503 contracted revolvers were sent to the Manila Ordnance Depot in the Philippine Islands. This revolver was sent back to the factory at some point and was fitted with additional cylinders. Configuration: blued factory refinish, 5 1/2" .44 Cal barrel with two-line address, blade front sight, square notched rear sight, smooth trigger, knurled hammer spur, fluted swing out six-shot cylinder, non-shrouded ejector rod, large square butt frame with lanyard loop, and two-piece smooth walnut grips. Includes a .38 Special cylinder with crane & ejector assembly, .45 Colt cylinder with crane & ejector assembly, a 6” New Service .38 Special barrel and a 4” New Service .38 Special barrel (cut-down & refinished). Matching serial numbers are found on the frame, cylinder latch and all three cranes. Military markings: Frame - "R.A.C.", "US/ARMY/MODEL/1909" & “No/34/669” and Left Grip Panel – “R.A.C.”. Revolver retains approximately 70% of its factory reblued finish showing scattered losses and pitting with a brown patina comprising the balance. Action is strong with a solid lock-up, the bore is excellent, markings are very good, and the wood grips are good+. Condition is NRA Good as refinished. ***C&R Firearm*** Notes from consignor: “This set belonged to Earl Naramore who was a well known shooter and ammunition/reloading author before WWII. In 50 plus years of selling collectible pre-war Colts we recall seeing no others with three factory matched cylinders.”
