Colt SAA U.S. Cavalry Series Revolver with desirable “J” inspection and in the 7th Cav replacement issue range, S/N 17236. Lightly cleaned long ago drifting to a natural gray patina with traces of case colors and blue where protected. Good address and markings. All matching visible serial numbers. Correct ejector rod head and housing with boss and stud. The barrel matches with “J” and “P” inspections, “J” and “P” on the cylinder, and “J” on the trigger guard. The grips show some hard use and wear with large chips from each toe and deep marks. “T.A.W.” carved in bottom right grip presumably original trooper’s initials. The frame has been re-drilled with oversize screw and cylinder pin replaced. Bore is fair with minor pitting and erosion but correct and not “Stretched”. Good action and correct hammer. The front sight has been slimmed slightly. Note: #17492 is the only recorded replacement for Colt’s lost by Custer. A post Big Horn Battle 7th Cav possible issue.#17371 lost September 13, 1877 at the Battle of Canyon Creek. 17128 recorded in the hands of the 7th Cavalry 1888, Co. F.
