Colt U.S. Model 1873 Artillery Single Action Revolver, #14228, 5.5" barrel .45 LC cal., blue and case hardened finish, walnut one-piece grip, full blade front sight, and "V"-notched rear sight. This was a cavalry revolver made in 1874 and had the barrel shortened in 1895-96 to an artillery. Revolver was inspected by O. W. Ainsworth and has all matching serial numbered parts, indicating the modification was done at the Colt plant. Many of these modified revolvers were issued during the Spanish American War. Receiver has the two-line patent dates and "U.S." on the left, with "14228" underneath. Loading gate is marked "606" and the ejector head is a bullseye. Barrel is marked "-COLT'S PT. FA. MFG. Co. HARTFORD. CT. U.S.A.-" in italic font on top and "P/A/P" with "4228" underneath. Cylinder is marked "4228" with an "A" and "P". Trigger guard is marked "14228" with an "A". Backstrap is marked "14228" with an "A" on top. Case colors has gone to silver. Blue finish is approx. 50% showing general wear on the cylinder, ejector housing, and barrel. The grips were sanded and are unmarked. Action locks up tight with four distinct clicks. Bore is very good with crisp rifling and a minor frosted area. All matching serial numbered artillery revolvers are rare. Est.: $4,000-$5,000. (Antique)
