Composite Springfield Trapdoor Carbine, Altered to Resemble a Model 1886 Experimental Carbine, #351177, .45-70 cal., barrel was shortened to 24", Buffington rear sight marked "XC" (Experimental Carbine). Lockplate has standard "(eagle)" and "U.S./Springfield" markings. Receiver has "low-arch" breechblock marked "US/Model/1884" at hinge. One-pc. oil-stained walnut stock has been altered to have tapered nose (without nosecap). Curved buttplate marked "US" at top with sliding door opening to butt trap. Stock lacks left-side inspector's cartouche and "P" proof at belly. Stock not inletted for hinge pin, and cleaning rod area collector modified. Condition is good, the barrel with traces of original blue but mostly brown gunmetal showing oxidation and occasional dings, fine markings. Breechblock, lock, and hammer show darkened case hardening with a bit of scattered light erosion. Stock is sound with scattered dings, pleasing grain. Action is crisp, bore shows general erosion, fair rifling. Est.: $500-$800. (Antique)
