Composite U.S. Model 1863 Springfield Military Rifle, shortened and modified with wooden barrel likely for theatrical or motion picture use, NVSN, .58 cal., 29'' round wooden barrel grafted to original steel breech cut to 2.5''; original steel fittings include beveled lockplate marked with a spread-wing eagle, ''U.S./Springfield'' and ''1863'', two-piece trigger guard with sling swivel at front, curved buttplate, two spring-retained barrel bands (top with sling swivel); one-piece oil-finished walnut stock shortened and rounded 3.5'' behind muzzle (no nosecap). Condition is about good as reconfigured, the metal showing a dark aged patina with scattered pitting (esp. to buttplate), the barrel stained dark. Stock shows much use with scattered dings, a deep crack opposite the lock and an added coat of varnish. Action functions well; ''bore'' extends about 5'' in from muzzle. Est.: $150-$250. (Antique)
