Richard Constable is recorded as being in business as a gun maker at 88 South 2nd Street, Philadelphia, Pennsylvania from 1817 to 1851. He was known to have produced firearms during the flintlock and percussion periods. Features 29 1/2" English Damascus barrels with Birmingham proofs, low profile rib, steel bead, back action side locks, double exposed 'rabbit ear' hammers, double triggers, fancy figured walnut stock with fine hand checkered panels on the wrist, smooth steel buttplate. Period wood ramrod with brass fittings. Locks are stamped "Constable", rib is stamped "Constable, Philadelphia" the locks, hammers, triggerguard, tangs and fittings are finely engraved with floral/scroll patterns. There is a square silver initials plate behind the upper tang engraved in script "PH". Solid rib with two silver wedding bands at breech. Bores measure "IM", LOP- 14 1/4". The bores are very good/bright, the barrels have turned a brown patina with age, markings are sharp/clear, hammer actions are crisp/tight with the half cock working perfectly, the wood/checkering are very good overall, there is a few minor scratches, dings and a scuff mark on the left forearm. Comes with a vintage metal box containing vintage 3 piece wood cleaning rod with worm attachment, 5 nipple wrenches, Powder Measure BGI Co., Black Powder Dram with Wooden Handle, black powder measure with funnel, jar of bird shot, patches. two green label tins of Remington UMC percussion caps, 6 tins of Remington/UMC percussion caps and a Civil War period brown leather powder flask stamped " Stamped AM Flask & Cap Co".
