Magnificent Custom Engraved Mauser Bolt Action Rifle, by Ed. Kettner, #25390, 8mmx57mm cal., rust blued and color case hardened, carved and checkered sporting rifle stock with Schnabel forend, horn triggerguard, buttplate, and pistol grip cap. Double set triggers, folding tang peep sight, and trap in bottom of stock for ammunition. Action is topped with a removable claw-mounted Hensolt-Wetzlar Ziel Dialyt 6x scope with three-post reticle. The 22.5'' barrel is 1/3 octagon, and 2/3 round with an integral matte engraved flat top rib, dovetailed ''V'' type rear sight with additional folding leaf, and a unique pinned front sight having a round gold tipped bead, and polished mirror finished roundel mounted at an angle to reflect light on the tip of the sight bead. Barrel has engraved markings that read ''Ed. Kettner, Suhl, 8x57'', and stamped proofmarks of ''St. mG'' and ''(crown)''. Color case hardened action is covered with large leaf type decorations and stippling, with checkered pattern on top of chamber area. Bolt has a spoon-handle knob with a checkered panel near the tip, and a checkered safety blade, color case hardened with a bright polished extractor spring and retaining ring. Folding peep sight behind the tang is adjustable for windage and elevation. Floorplate and housing are engraved with floral, leaf flourishes, stippling, and a six-point buck deer. There is a floorplate release lever that is engraved also. Triggerguard is a wide solid one-piece carved horn type, typical of high end German rifles and shotguns. Pistol grip cap is horn, retained with a single screw. An engraved color case hardened folding trap is fitted to the bottom edge of the rear buttstock, with a slotted hole for storage. Stock features a Monte Carlo type cheekpiece on the left side, checkered and carved grip panels, forend, and carved decorated Schnabel tip, with sling swivels. Condition is excellent with barrel having approx. 98% of its original rust blued finish. There are a couple of small scratches on either side of barrel from use, and slight wear to the bluing at muzzle sides. Color case hardening finish on the action and floorplate are approx. 99%. Bolt shows wear to the finish where it rides in the action from normal use, with a few light scuffs on the bright extractor spring. Bolt release lever and spring show some high edgewear to fire blued finish, with some light scratches on the spring. Horn triggerguard has a few very minor nicks to the sharp side edge. Horn pistol grip cap is cracked in the lower center. Grooved horn buttplate has some small dings, and some insect damage in several places. Stock appears to be English walnut and has its original finish; checkering is very fine and well executed, with wonderful hand carved decorations surrounding the checkering. There are some minor scratches and scuffs in the sides of the stock around triggerguard and action area, sides of buttstock, near bullet trap and cheekpiece. Scope retains approx. 98% of its original rust blued finish and shows wear mainly on the high edges of the black painted lens retainers. Action and double set triggers function properly; bore is bright and shiny; optics are clear and bright. A beautiful rifle with top quality work and finish. Est.: $2,500-$3,000. (Modern)
