DEEP RELIEF ENGRAVED & GOLD INLAID 98 MAUSER SHORT

RIFLE BY ROY VAIL WITH SCOPE IN MATCHING MOUNT. Cal. 7x61. S# 138. Bbl. 20". This rifle is typical of the work done by Roy Vail & exhibits 50s-60s styling. It has 20" half oct. half rnd. bbl. fitted w/ integral matted rib. No rear sight is installed. Red front bead is in raised portion of rib forming ramp. “ROY VAIL” is in relief gold on rectangular gold label at center of rib. Model 98 action is fitted w/ European side mount has had bolt altered for low scope use. Knob has lightening cut. Bottom metal is fitted w/ hinged floorplate w/ release button in triggerguard bow. Action is engraved w/ near full coverage relief carved oak leaves & acorns surrounding relief gold inlaid portraits of big game; a big horn ram is on left side of receiver ring & grizzly bear is on right. Floorplate has central vignette of an extremely fine rendition of a bull elk in quartering view w/ engraved mountainous background. Bolt handle has oak leaves, acorns & branches inlaid in 2 color red & yellow gold. A snarling mountain lion is on grip cap. Stock is of an attractive piece of American walnut w/ quilted figure & features "Noshok" pad, shadow line Monte Carlo cheekpiece, ebony forend tip, rounded borderless pattern checkering at grip & forend, sling eyes & a sm. gold rectangle on toeline engraved “LGC”. Rifle is fitted w/ Kahles Heliea scope w/ crosshair & post reticle in European mounts matching side mount base. Rings & mount are engraved in oak leaf motif; tops of rings in semi-relief. CONDITION: very fine retaining over 95% custom metal & wood finishes w/ only a few minor handling & assembly marks. Bright shiny bore, mechanically smooth. Scope is very fine w/ just a bit of cloudiness, possibly dirt. (21-3252/MGM). CURIO. $3,000-4,500.
