ROCKET. Contrary to popular belief shoulder fire rocket launchers are not a new technology. Looking back to the 18th Century will reveal early flintlock designs modified to launch a makeshift grenade. More recently the military complex has refined their capabilities. The first RPG system the RPG-2 was simply a tube that launched a grenade. To the rear of the grenade was a launch charge that expelled the grenade with later versions utilizing a rocket that fired once it was out of range of the operator. The rocket was stabilized by 6 sheet metal fins placed at its rear. The effective range was a maximum of 150 meters and it utilized simple iron sights for aiming. The RPG-7 first hit the field in 1961. There are currently almost 30 variations of the RPG-7, most of them duplicate the Russian and Chinese variants. This particular example the RPG-7 was manufactured in Russia, bearing the Kovrov Plant arsenal mark (arrow in oval) on the trigger group. It is in a completely inert state at this time, non-firing and deactivated. The high-pressure chamber has a large hole drilled through it that is concealed beneath the brown heat shield to remain esthetically correct. It has also been properly demilled with the addition of a welded steel rod blocking the center of the chamber. Both pistol grips utilize brown plastic grip surfaces and the trigger group bears the following markings: “56-r-660” with the Kovrov Arsenal mark. The left side of the blast chamber has a scope mount where the correct optic for aiming is located. The nro-7B optic is complete with the battery cup, rubber eye piece, padded forehead rest & rubber objective cover. The pistol grips and heat shield are a matching reddish brown in color while the remainder of the tube is painted black. The trigger group retains its original natural aluminum finish. Folding iron sights are still present consisting of a crude protected post front sight with a rear sight graduated in adjustment from 200 to 500 meters. It currently sports a black nylon sling & both canvas / leather end covers are present. It is accompanied by an inert display rocket and cleaning rod. RPG-7 measures 37.5” in length with rockets measuring 36.5” long. UNATTACHED ACCESSORIES: 1 inert rocket, 1 RPG cleaning rod & woodland camoflauge carry case. CONDITION: this RPG-7 is in nicer condition than most. Grip panels and heat shield bear only light signs of handling upon close inspection. Black painted tube retains complete consistent coverage with only light thinning on high spots. PROVENANCE: From the Working Reference Collection of Military Arms Instructor, Master Sergeant Vincent Pestilli. (02-21772/JZ). $700-1,100.
