ACTION RIFLE BELONGING TO FAMOUS EXPLORER ANTHONY FIALA. Cal. 30-06. S# 1264886. Rifle was documented by Springfield Research Service from the records of the Springfield Armory giving the following information: "Type: Rifle, cal. 30, M1903, U.S., N.M., Pistol Grip Stock, S# 1264886. / Sold to: Anthony Fiala, ORC. New York, N.Y. / Date: November 3rd, 1924 / From Springfield Sales Records". Anthony Fiala (1869-1950) was a noted American explorer & served as a correspondent for the Brooklyn "Daily Eagle" & also served at the same time as a trooper in the Spanish American War. He accompanied the Baldwin-Ziegler North Pole Expedition as a photographer. He commanded the Ziegler Polar Expedition. In 1914, Fiala accompanied Theodore Roosevelt on the Roosevelt-Rondon Scientific Expedition into the Brazilian wilderness. This rifle has 24" star gauge bbl. marked behind front sight "SA flaming bomb 6-24". Ladder rear sight graduated to 2850yds. Flat windage & elevation knobs. Blade front sight w/ unmarked sheet metal sight cover. Receiver does not have "Hatcher Hole". Polished bolt is marked on top "J5". Extractor w/ gas hole is unmarked. Mag. cutoff is polished on underside. All milled furniture. Upper band is marked "H" on bayonet lug. Grooved trigger. Fine checkered trap buttplate. "S" Type straight grip walnut stock w/ 2 recoil bolts, appears to be replacement, perhaps done at Camp Perry as rifle was originally shipped w/ pistol grip (Type "B") stock according to Armory records. Stock is marked w/ boxed "DAL", additionally marked w/ partially discernable "W (?)" in cut off recess. Period 1907 sling marked "TURNER SADDLERY" & "NM". Stock & handguard do not have visible drawing numbers. UNATTACHED ACCESSORIES: Springfield Research Letter dated September 21, 2010 & internet research about Anthony Fiala. CONDITION: replacement stock set has lightly worn finish & scattered handling marks w/ light professional refinish. Edges of grasping grooves have lightly worn appearance. Metal retains high degree of original dark parkerizing w/ light high point wear. Very good shiny bore w/ sharp lands. (21-1443/RW). CURIO. $2,000-4,000.
