1) This document measures 10" x 8" & is on blue lined paper. The document is titled, “Head Quarters Batl. Eng. Troops at Dalton Geo. February 23d 1864”. The document is addressed, “Captain” & tells Captain Gloster to keep on hand 60 rds. of ammunition for each man & to immediately requisition articles so each man has a full complement of accoutrements, equipment & arms. Document is signed, “S.W. Presstman Major Comdg Co Eng Troops”.
2) This document measures 10" x 8" & is on blue lined paper. The document is titled, “Circular” & advises Captain Gloster that each company of Engineer Troops is allowed two 6 horse wagons & one 4 horse forge. All extra transportation will be turned into the Quartermaster. The document is signed, “S.W. Presstman Major Cmdg Eng Troops”.
3) This document measures 8" x 5" & is on white lined paper. The document is addressed, “Captain” & advises Captain Gloster to have his arms & accoutrements complete & in good order as he may be called to action at a moments notice.
4) This document measures 10" x 8" & is on blue lined paper. The document is titled, “General Order No 5” & advises Captain Gloster & the other officers under the command of Major Presstman that all officers should muster on Monday, Feb. 29, 1864 for inspection & to receive pay. The document goes on to name 10 officers. Document is signed, “S.W. Presstman Major Cmdg Eng Troops”.
5) This document measures 6 1/2" x 8" & is on white lined paper. The document is titled, “Head Quarters Batl. Eng Troops at Dalton Geo March 10 64”. The document is addressed, “Captain” & advises Captain Golster to resubmit requisitions & complete a list of all deaths & desertions which have occurred & to do this at the end of every month. Document is signed, “S.W. Presstman Major Comdg Eng Troops.”.
6) This document measures 13" x 8" & is on blue lined paper. The document is titled, “Hd Quarters Eng Troops at Dalton Geo March 11. 1864”. Document is titled, “Circular” & names all the items that should be kept in constant supply in an engineering unit & Captains are commanded to constantly keep a full complement of supplies onhand. Tools include 50 axes, foot adzes, mortising chisels, augers, compasses, bench saws & much, much more. Document is signed, “S.W. Presstman Major Cmdg Eng Troops”.
7) This document measures 9" x 14 1/2" & is on white lined paper. The document is titled, “Camp Engineer Troops Near Atlanta Georgia March 13, 1864”. The document is basically a hand written furlough paper for N P Koonce of Gloster’s Engineer Troop to return home to Mississippi for 30 days along w/ all the endorsements on the paper for this to be honored throughout his trip from Atlanta. Document is signed, “A.W. Gloster Capt Comdg Co Engineers Troops”.
8) This document measures 7" x 8" & is on blue lined paper. The document is titled, “Head Quarters Batl Eng Troops at Dalton Geo March 17 1864”. Document is addressed, “Capt A W Gloster”. The document asks for an overdue list of deserters & deaths. Document is signed, “I am your …. J.W. Chalmers”. This document is quite light. CONDITION: paper is generally in solid condition. Document #7 has tears on the fold. There are no notable tears in the other documents. Writing is generally clear & in a good hand except as noted. Most letters can easily be read.
