1) This document measures 6" x 7" & is on white lined paper. The document is titled, “Head Qrs Engr Dept AT Oct 20. 1864.”. The document is addressed, “Captain”. The document reads, “You will take up your bridge tomorrow morning at sunrise, and without delay report with your train at Gadsden. Move on north side of Coosa River.”. The document is signed, “By command of Genl Hood S.W. Presstman Lt Co & Actj Ch Engr AT”.
2) This document measures 5 1/2" x 8" & is on white paper. The document is titled, “Head Quarters Engr Dept A.T. Oct 20. 1864”. The document is addressed, “Captain”. The document reads, “I have just sent you an order to take up your bridge tomorrow morning at sunrise. General Hood has since directed me to retain your bridge in position until 9 o’clock - when you will take up your bridge and move without delay to Gadsden.”. The document is signed, “Respectfully S.W. Presstman Lt Col & Actg Ch Engr”.
3) This document measures 8" x 6" & is on white lined paper. The document is titled, “Oct. 29th, 1864 about 10 pm”. The document is addressed, “Captain: -”. The document reads, “I have just landed on the north bank of the river and can hear nothing of Gen Johnson. I presume he has gone on to Florence, and I do not think it is necessary for you to remain here longer with your boats, you can move them to Florence at once. Do not forget to cross Johnson's Pioneer Company which is on the island.”. The document is signed, “Respectfully, J P Wilson Ad. Genl”.
4) This document measures 6 1/2" x 9" & is on white lined paper. The document is titled, “Head Qrt’s 3d Eng Troops Florence Nov 11th 1864”. The document reads, “Special Order No 35”. The document states, “Private Jas H Vigus of Capt Clarkson's is hereby appointed Sergeant Major of the regiment, the appointment to date from the 3rd instant. He will be respected and obeyed accordingly”. The document is signed, “By Order J.W. Green, Major Commd’g Percy Roberts, AAdjt”. This document is exceptionally light.
5) This document measures 6" x 7" & is on tan lined paper. The document is titled, “Franklin Dec 1. 1864.”. The document is addressed, “Captain”. The document states, “Move forward and park train near this place, holding yourself in ready to move at a moments notice”. The document is signed, “Respectfully S.W. Presstman Lt Col & Ch Eng”.
6) This document measures 8 1/2" x 7" & is on white lined paper. The document is titled, “Hd Qrts 3d Regt Eng Troops Columbia Dec 1st 1864.”. The document is addressed, “Capt A.W. Gloster Comdg Co Capt”. The document reads, “You will resume the march early in the morning for this place. If a currier with dispatches from Hd Qtrs should stop at your train inquiring for me open the dispatch and if it relates to a movement of your train be favored by it and notify me.”. The document is signed, “Respl J.L. Green Major Commd’g”.
7) This document measures 9" x 7" & is on white lined paper. The document is titled, “Columbia Dec 1st 9. AM.”. The document is addressed, “Capt.”. The document reads, “I have just rec’vd an order from Col Presstman directing that your train be returned here until further orders. Upon receipt of this, you will return with your train to this place.”. The document is signed, “Respl J.W. Green Major Commdg Eng Troops”.
8) This document cannot be measured. It is on tan paper. The document appears to be a roster w/ writing that reads, “Orders from Regimental Hd Qrs”. There is an interesting tag on the front that says, “Relic. Rebel Payrolls and Regimental Orders of Engineer Troops in Georgia 1864 Presented by Past Post Comdr Chas. H. Kirk”. The document needs conservation & is difficult to unfold in its current condition. Historic Note: Several documents contain unknown facts relating to the Battles of Franklin and Nashville. CONDITION: paper is generally in solid condition. There are no notable tears in the documents unless otherwise noted. Writing is generally clear & in a good hand.
