PISTOL. Cal. 9mm Luger. S# 2681b. Bbl. 6" with fin shaped sight having serrations continuing through base; 100 / 200 meter rear sight attached to rear toggle. Per Sturgess Vol. II Luger book this is the 3rd Variant having coil mainspring, no grip safety and thumb safety being safe in lower position (GESICHERT in upper position). Other characteristics of this variant are blank chamber and matching receiver number in two steps; "28" in front of lug and "81" on lug along with "Z". Per Sturgess these Navies numbered 1 to approximately 9500b. Earliest examples had leaf mainsprings, grip safeties and up safe lever position. Next variant had safe in the down position and grip safety. This variation quickly discernible by down safety position and no grip safety. Navy contract issued approximately 1913 and fulfilled 1914 and 1915. Another reference book by Davis refers to this as a 1914 Navy Military within S# range of 1000b to 9999b indicating continuance of 1906 2nd issue numbers. Left front of receiver has crown proof plus 2 crown M proofs. Matching numbered barrel has crown and crown M proofs. Left side of breech block has crown proof. Backstrap stamped "W.K." over "10667"; Werft zu (Dockyard at) Kiel. Additional matching numbered parts: sear, sideplate, both grips (left has 4 & N; right has d & N), trigger, safety lever, safety bar, takedown lever, both toggles and breech block. Extractor stamped "P". Small strawed parts plus appropriate internal areas are in the white. MAGS: 1 good to very good correct tin plated 8 round. Wood base with concentric circle dimples and proper crown M proof. Light dent in spine about 1/3 down. CONDITION: near excellent overall appearance that appears to be original finish with exceptionally clear markings. Small chip in rim of rear toggle pivot and light pitting under grips near outside edges. Mag release noticeably faded with almost silver appearance; safety lever with no traces of straw and cleaned spots of light pitting. Trigger, ejector and takedown lever have very good straw colors. Hold open latch has fire blue temper colors at midpoint blending to straw. Extremely faint finish loss on high points of sideplate and at muzzle. Very good to excellent grips with very minimal diamond top marks. Very good bore; bright with distinct rifling and very faint traces of frosting. (22-5553/NW). CURIO. $5,000-7,500.
