Daisho Set of Antique Japanese Tsubas - Iron Sukashi Flowers and Vines, ca. 18th to 19th Century. Nice daisho set of round shaped iron tsubas, with sukashi pierced designs of large flowers, with small gold inlaid flowers and vines. Possibly Higo School work. The center of the large flower is covered with gold, with carved lines and definition to the flower petals. Below is a sukashi design of broad leaves with inlaid gold vines and small flowers. The designs are similar on both sides. There are kozuka and kogai hitsuanas on either side of the nakago anas. The hitsus on the dai tsuba are filled with shakudo plugs. The tsubas are unsigned. The dai tsuba measures 74mm wide x 75.5mm tall. The sho tsuba measures 70mm wide x 71.5mm tall. Condition is very good, the iron having a dark brown rust patina overall with some light red rust in the crevices. The rims show a heavier rust patina around the edges. The gold inlay is mostly all intact showing only minor wear. The nakago anas show filing and a punch marks from being fitted onto different swords over their lifetime. The dai tsuba has a copper sekigane added at the top of the nakago ana, and appears to have had one at the bottom, but now missing, for fitting to the sword tang. The shakudo plug for the kogai hitsuana has some small dents in it. There is slight wear to the patina on both of the shakudo plugs. Includes a wood daisho double box and thin pillow. Est.: $600-$1,000.
