Daisho Set of Antique Japanese Tsubas - Shakudo/Nanako Dragons, Signed, ca. 19th to early 20th Century. Beautiful daisho set of mokko-shaped shakudo/nanako tsubas with decorations of male and female dragons in clouds. The dragons are covered in gold, with shakudo, gold, and copper clouds in relief. Made as a matching set, for katana and wakizashi, to be mounted on a daisho set of swords, as worn by samurai in the Edo time period. Both tsubas have kozuka and kogai hitsuanas on either side of the nakago ana. Both are signed "Goto Senjo" with kakihan. While the workmanship is very good, the signatures are not certified. The dai tsuba measures 70mm wide x 76.5mm tall. The sho tsuba measures 64mm wide x 70mm tall. Condition is excellent, with a wonderful dark blue/black patina to the nanako stippled surface. The nanako covers the background of the tsubas, as well as extending around the rims. The carving of the dragons and clouds is very well done in both low and high relief, with gold, polished shakudo, and dark copper applied to accentuate the details; the reverse side features small groups of cloud clusters. The nakago anas show signs of being mounted on swords at one time. There are no dings or scratches on the edges or main bodies of the tsubas, with faint scratches around the seppa dai areas from being mounted. Overall a wonderful set of daisho tsubas. Includes a deluxe wood double box for daisho tsubas, with pillows and silk bags. Est.: $2,500-$4,000.
