Cal. 10 Ga., 2 7/8". S# 18646. Bbls. 20 1/8" of twist steel. Rib is marked "E. JAMES & C. LOVEDAY. ST. BIRM". Rnd. bodied side lever action w/ exposed hammer back action locks. Action, locks & trigger guard bow have borderline & simple scroll engraving. Key fastened forearm & straight hand stock of English walnut w/ steel shotgun buttplate having name shield in toeline. Stock has a brass wrapping repair at wrist. UNATTACHED ACCESSORIES: binder of diagrams & explanation of markings from Wendell Grangaard, the Guns of History Inc. Sioux Falls, SD. Mr. Grangaard interprets many of these markings to be "Togia", the written sign language of the Plains Indians. His interpretation attributes the shotgun to "Feathered Earring", a Minneconjou who was born in 1849. Feathered Earring fought at the Little Big Horn. CONDITION: gun has a worn gray/brown appearance. Forearm shows extremely heavy wear & marks that appear to be from pressing down barbed wire fence. Stock has worn appearance showing numerous scratches & marks including those interpreted by Mr. Grangaard as Indian applied. Sound locks. Right bore is heavily pitted. Left bore shows sm. spots of pitting. (01-17981/DS). ANTIQUE. $3,000-5,000.
