Eli Whitney Federal contract M1816/1822 infantry Musket dated 1841 chambered in .69 caliber. Manufactured in New Haven Conn. 1841. Started out as a flintlock, and was converted to percussion using the "Belgian" cone in barrel method, circa 1850 to 1856. The flash pan, and frizzen were removed, and the holes filled , and a brass bolster was added to the barrel, the hammer was replaced. 42" barrel with front sight base only. Lock plate marked "U.S. E. Whitney", and "New Haven 1841". Barrel marked "U.S.", and "JM"., tang marked "1841". Buttplate marked "US". Brass escutcheon on the left stock. Two very good/clear inspectors cartouches on the left wrist. Action is crisp/tight. All markings are clear. Wood is very good with some stains on the right lower buttstock. Traces of blue on the plate, and hammer. Barrel and triggerguard have turned a gray/brown patina with traces of an old thinning coat of varnish, mostly on the lower barrel, and triggerguard.
