EARLY 19TH CENTURY MILITIA ARTILLERY LIMBER CHEST.
A truly rare early American militia limber chest featuring 15 internal divisions each measuring slightly over 3 1/2” square. Wear patterns on the interior of the chest indicate that 2 rnd. cannon balls were carried in each division, possibly for a 4 or 6 lb. cannon. The chest is extremely well built & heavy. There is a 36 1/2" carrying pole on each side of the chest to facilitate transportation by 2 or 4 men. The chest itself measures 22” in length, 14 7/8” in width & 17 3/4” to the peak of the hinged lid. There are 2 iron support straps on the front & back & 2 on each side that attach the carrying poles. A lg. iron loop on the back was possibly used to carry equipment used in loading cannon. The peaked lid is bound w/ 3 heavy iron straps. The center strap has a hinged hasp to allow the chest to be locked to the diamond shaped escutcheon on the front of the box. The body of the chest is painted a subdued light blue/green. Iron straps at the end of each handle are painted black. The front of the lid is painted “NO 86.”. The peak of the chest is reinforced w/ a thinner iron plate. CONDITION: shows moderate wear overall but remains extremely solid. There are a few losses to the lip of the lid on either side. An extremely rare & seldom seen early American piece of artillery equipment. (02-13491/BF). $1,000-1,500.
