EARLY DOVETAIL WOODEN BOX POSSIBLY USED BY A

VIRGINIA FARRIER. Box measures approximately 24” x 14” x 11 1/2" high. Box appears to be made of yellow pine with a poplar lid. There are iron handles on opposite ends and iron hinges in the rear. The keyhole is decorated with brass nails in the shape of a star. The interior of the lid has similar brass nail decoration that reads “VA CAV. (heart) JFF”. There is a leather & brass martingale in the center of the heart. The interior of the box has a till on the right hand side & a leather looped strap in the rear to hold tools. A chain is attached to hold the lid while open. Though it is impossible to accurately date the period of the brass nail decoration, the box itself shows construction techniques utilized in the 1840’s through the 1870’s. CONDITION: box shows moderate to heavy wear but remains relatively solid throughout. Brass nails are well patinated and iron parts are oxidized. (02-17471/BF). $400-600.
