EARLY GERMAN EXECUTIONER’S SWORD WITH ETCHED

BLADE. Overall length: 26 1/2". Blade length: 36". The square tipped blade has a single central fuller extending 11" up from the hilt. 1 Side of the blade is etched w/ a gallows, oak leaves & the words, “Wan ich das Schwert duhe auff heben so wunsche ich dem armen Sunder das ewige Leben” which translates to “When I pick up the sword, I wish the poor sinner eternal life”. The blade has etched markings near the hilt inside of rectangles that read, “Johannis Beugel” & “Solingen 1646”. The other side of the blade is etched w/ a hanging person, oak leaves & the words, “Wan dich in Dugend ubest woll dis Richtschwert dich nicht treffen soll” which translates to “When you're in trouble, you don't want the sword to hit you”. Heavy iron 8" crossguard w/ spherical terminals. Heavy, iron lobed spherical pommel & iron wire wrapped grip. CONDITION: blade has a medium gray mottled patina. Etching is quite clear. Crossguard & pommel has a uniform dark patina. Grip is complete. (02-16232/BF). $2,000-3,500.
