EARLY JAPANESE MATCHLOCK MUSKET.

Cal. 49. NSN. Bbl. 39 1/4" nicely swamped oct., w/ slight flare to muzzle appears to be pattern welded. Bbl. has gold inlaid Japanese characters & on top flat behind sight. Iron pan is forged on right side of bbl. & has hinged brass cover. Brass lockplate w/ stylized ocean & rock engraving fitted w/ file decorated dog that has brass flower at pivot. Lock cocks by depressing rear extension of dog & is fired by ball trigger in rnd. cast guard. Near full length stock is of dense, attractively grained, hardwood which resembles American live oak, & is pinned to bbl. CONDITION: good. Bbl. w/ considerable age darkening reveals some regularity of oxidation due to underlying iron/steel combination. Brass cleaned many years ago is nicely toned. Stock w/ probable old light refinish presently has attractive smooth surfaces. Lock is operable. Bore pitted. Ramrod missing. PROVENANCE: The Estate Collection of Gary Parietti. (01-19721/MGM).
